2015 Resolution #1: Start Blog

Saturday, 3 January 2015
Hi friends and family (or, more realistically, just our parents) and welcome to our New Zealand blog.

In case you're out of the loop, we recently moved to New Zealand for Emma to complete a one-year research fellowship at the University of Auckland. In a stroke of good fortune, Justin's company in Calgary offered him the opportunity to continue working remotely while in New Zealand. So, here we are.

In our weekends and free moments, we'll be trying to experience as much of the country as possible. We (ok, Emma) will try to post updates here on a regular basis.

Our new home:

As for the name of the blog, it is inspired by the unofficial New Zealand slogan: "Sweet as!"

This truncated similie is used very frequently by Kiwis to express positivity or enthusiasm about something. For instance:

Kiwi #1: "We're going to see the Hobbit today!"
Kiwi #2: "Sweet as!"

The comparison is always left incomplete, and New Zealand as a whole seems to be fine with this. However, Emma still silently wonders "Sweet as what?" every time she hears it. Hence, the name of the blog.

Of note, although most Kiwis we've asked seem unsure about the origin of the expression, some superficial internet research suggests that it is an abbreviation of the phrase "Sweet as a nut"...which also doesn't make a lot of sense.

We've picked up lots of additional NZ slang since we arrived, so we'll try to update you on the choicest new words in our vocabulary as we go.
